(Elsie) I started this piece last year when I was living in Balgo. Late at night, the colour palette poured out of me with playful ease. The constantly evolving colours of the desert, emerging and melting and setting on fire and fading in a magnificent show…

(Simon) I had arrived back from the Kimberley (Balgo) the previous month. Camping by the Blackwood river in south west Australia then travelling to the Murrumbidgee in Victoria, I recalled and wove the patterns of the desert into Elsie’s colours. Old rocks, vast spinifex and mulla mulla plains, the wide dry horizon and open skies hinting at waters to come.
